Search Engine Optimization

Beautiful websites that nobody finds don't sell anything

SEO Isn't an Add-On. It's Built In.

Every website we build includes search engine optimization from the ground up. Not as an afterthought, not as an upsell, and not as a vague promise to "improve your rankings." Specific, measurable technical work that helps real people find your website when they search for what you offer.

This page is for those who want to know what that actually means under the hood.

Technical Foundation

Before a single word of content is written, the technical infrastructure has to be right. Search engines can't rank what they can't crawl, and they penalize what loads slowly.

  • SSL/HTTPS - Google ranking factor since 2014. Browser warnings on HTTP sites destroy trust and bounce rates. Every site we build runs HTTPS from day one.
  • Mobile-First Design - Google indexes the mobile version of your site, not the desktop version. Over 60% of searches happen on mobile. We design mobile-first, not mobile-afterthought.
  • Core Web Vitals - Page speed, visual stability, and interactivity are direct ranking factors. We optimize images, minify code, and enable caching to hit Google's performance thresholds.
  • XML Sitemap - Tells search engines what pages exist and their priority. Submitted to Google Search Console so new and updated content gets indexed faster.
  • robots.txt - Controls what search engines can crawl. Prevents indexing of admin pages and duplicates. Points to sitemap location.
  • Clean URL Structure - Readable URLs that include target keywords. /gallery/landscape-paintings ranks better than /?p=123.
  • Custom 404 Handling - Keeps users on your site when they hit a broken link. We monitor for broken links and fix them promptly.

On-Page Optimization

Every page on your site is individually optimized. This isn't one-size-fits-all metadata slapped across the entire site.

  • Unique Title Tags - Primary ranking signal. 50-60 characters, target keyword included. Every page gets its own, not a template.
  • Unique Meta Descriptions - 150-160 characters that affect click-through rate from search results. Written to make people click, not just to stuff keywords.
  • Header Hierarchy - One H1 per page with the primary keyword. H2s and H3s structured so search engines understand your content organization.
  • Keyword Strategy - Target keywords placed naturally in titles, headers, first 100 words, and URLs. Semantic variations and related terms included. No keyword stuffing.
  • Internal Linking - Distributes page authority throughout your site and helps search engines discover content. Descriptive anchor text, never "click here."
  • Image Optimization - Compressed for speed, descriptive filenames, alt text for accessibility and image search ranking. Critical for artists whose work is the images.
  • Canonical Tags - Prevents duplicate content penalties by telling Google which version of a page is authoritative.

Structured Data (Schema.org Markup)

This is where most web agencies stop, because most web agencies don't know how to do it. Structured data tells search engines what your content is, not just what it says. It's the difference between Google showing a plain blue link and Google showing a rich result with your business hours, star ratings, and FAQ answers right in the search results.

  • Organization / LocalBusiness Schema - Enables the business information panel in search results. Name, address, phone, hours, logo in JSON-LD format.
  • Product and Offer Schema - Markup for artwork listings, print products, and eCommerce. Enables rich product results in Google Search and Google Shopping.
  • Breadcrumb Schema - Shows your site hierarchy in search results. Improves click-through rate and helps users understand site structure.
  • FAQ Schema - Generates expandable Q&A directly in search results. Takes up more real estate on the results page and answers questions before the click.
  • Review / Rating Schema - Displays star ratings in search results. Must be based on actual reviews, as Google penalizes fabricated ratings.

Local SEO

If you sell locally — through galleries, art fairs, or your own studio — local search is where your next collector comes from. When someone searches "landscape painter Aurora IL" or "oil paintings near me," the results they see are driven by local SEO factors.

  • Google Business Profile - Claimed, verified, and fully completed. Photos, services, hours, description. This is the primary factor for local pack rankings.
  • NAP Consistency - Your Name, Address, and Phone number must be identical everywhere: website, directories, social profiles, citations. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt rankings.
  • Local Keywords - City and region included in title tags, content, and metadata. Location-specific landing pages where appropriate.
  • Local Citations - Listings on relevant directories and art-specific platforms where appropriate. Gallery directories, artist registries, and community listings.
  • Review Strategy - Active review requests from satisfied customers and collectors. Responses to all reviews, positive and negative. Review velocity and recency matter for ranking.

E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust

Google's quality guidelines emphasize these four signals. For artists, demonstrating authentic expertise and building trust are what separate your site from the thousands of template-based portfolio pages that Google can barely tell apart.

  • Artist Bio & Credentials - Exhibition history, awards, publications, gallery representation, artist statement. Real information that establishes authority in your field.
  • About Page - Your story, your process, your background. Not marketing fluff — real information that establishes who you are and why your work matters.
  • Trust Signals - Gallery affiliations, awards, press mentions, professional memberships displayed where Google can find them and where collectors can verify them.

Monitoring and Ongoing Optimization

SEO isn't a one-time setup. Search algorithms evolve, competitors adjust, and content gets stale. We monitor and maintain your search performance as part of your managed service plan.

  • Google Search Console - Sitemap submitted, indexing monitored, crawl errors tracked, search performance and keyword data reviewed regularly.
  • Analytics - Traffic sources, user behavior, bounce rates, conversions. We identify what's working and what needs attention.
  • Regular Audits - Broken link checks, crawl error review, Core Web Vitals monitoring.
  • Content Freshness - Existing content updated periodically with new information. Google favors recently updated content for many queries.
